frequently asked questions

Take a look below for frequently asked questions about acupuncture and the services we offer. If you do not see the answer to your question here, please feel free to ask your question in the form below and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture treatments are very gentle and most patients feel minimal if any discomfort. The acupuncture needles are about the width of a hair and generally only a minimal and short lasting sensation is felt at insertion. Once the needles are in, the body then relaxes and most patients will take a nap while their body starts the healing process. At some points you may feel a dull achy sensation which is a sign that the energy or "qi" has arrived at the point.

Is there anything acupuncture can't treat?

Essentially, no! Acupuncture has a different way of diagnosing and treating issues than is done in Western medicine. So whether you know exactly what is going on or you've been a medical mystery to your doctors, acupuncture can still work to balance your system and improve your health.

What should I wear?

You can wear anything that is comfortable that allows access up to the elbows and knees, so a loose long sleeve shirt, t shirt, yoga pants or shorts will work! If necessary, a sheet can be provided for comfort. Pillows and heat lamp will be provided but if anything else helps you feel comfortable (i.e. eye mask, special pillow or blanket, etc) you are welcome to bring it.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is an extremely safe and effective treatment with minimal side effects. Occasionally acupuncture may leave a small bruise at the insertion site but this is uncommon and will usually disappear within a few days. All needles are sterilized, single use and disposed of as a biohazard after the treatment. Acupuncture can be used safely for people of all ages and with almost all conditions.

How do I get to the office?

The office is located in the Olympia building at 888 Purchase St. in downtown New Bedford. There is street parking on Purchase St. or feel free to park in the garage on Elm St. behind the building. You can enter the building through the atrium at the back of the building or from Purchase St. Once inside, take the elevator or stairs to the 3rd floor.
