Pregnancy can be such an exciting (and nerve-wracking) time in life. It marks a significant transition, filled with anticipation and hope for the future. As soon as the news is confirmed, a whirlwind of emotions can take over, ranging from sheer joy to overwhelming anxiety. With the ups and downs of physical symptoms, this joyous and gleeful time can often be overshadowed by not feeling your best.
Many expectant mothers experience a variety of physical changes that can be both fascinating and challenging. From morning sickness, which can occur at any time of the day, to fatigue that seems to linger no matter how much rest is obtained, your body undergoes a remarkable transformation that can sometimes feel daunting. One of our favorite phrases in Chinese medicine is, "during pregnancy you have a new body every 3 days," and all of my pregnant patients agree at how true this feels! From our TCM perspective, this occurs due to your body needing to create more Blood and Qi (energy) to support this baby, which is significantly taxing on the body. Moreover, the emotional rollercoaster can be just as intense. Hormonal fluctuations can lead to mood swings that may catch you off guard, leaving feelings of elation one moment and tears the next. These emotional highs and lows are a normal part of the journey, yet they can complicate the experience, making it difficult to fully embrace the joy of impending parenthood.
Pregnancy can be physically and mentally challenging enough, but the anticipation of childbirth itself can be a source of anxiety as well. Many women worry about the labor process, the pain involved, and the unknown aspects of bringing a new life into the world. It's essential to acknowledge these feelings and seek out support, whether through prenatal classes, discussions with healthcare providers, or connecting with other expectant mothers. One of the best ways to support physical and emotional health, manage stress during pregnancy, and prepare for labor is with acupuncture. Pregnancy is often someone's first experience with acupuncture as they're not able to use typical Western Medical approaches (like pain relievers) which are contraindicated during pregnancy. Acupuncture during pregnancy is helpful for managing physical symptoms & pregnancy related disorders such as:
Headaches & sinus congestion
Nausea & vomiting
Round ligament pain
Pubic symphysis dysfunction
Low back pain & sciatica
Constipation
Swelling in hands & feet, carpal tunnel syndrome
Acid reflux
Fatigue
Breech presentation
Placenta previa
In addition to the physical symptoms that acupuncture can help with, it also excels at treating the more mental/emotional issues that may come up, including:
Anxiety, worry, & fear
Depression & low mood
Stress
Insomnia
Irritability & rage
By understanding and resolving these issues from the root cause, we create space for you to focus on the positive aspects of pregnancy and enjoy this new journey. Acupuncture is safe to use during preconception to prepare for pregnancy and all throughout pregnancy. We typically recommend weekly treatments during the first trimester, to keep hormones stable and keep symptoms at bay. During second trimester, acupuncture can be used as often as weekly if needed for pain/symptom management or as infrequently as monthly tune ups to keep the Qi flowing and keep pain and discomfort low. As we approach delivery, we recommend weekly treatments starting at about 34 weeks to get your body ready for hopefully a smooth and easy delivery. I love treating women during pregnancy because I'm not only treating one person, but two! Though only mom is getting the acupuncture, babies respond to the energy as well, moving and kicking more, "dancing" to the Qi moving. It always gives me a laugh and proves to me that the effects of acupuncture are real and tangible.
